I witnessed how emotions were crucial to survival in combat situations as a combat Army veteran. There is no escaping the reality of
war and the impact these experiences have on the human mind. After my military discharge, I struggled to understand what had transpired in the time I was away from home. The war was one part of the human experience. What I had focused on was the emotional side of those experiences. My academia did not prepare me for what would come before me in dealing with people in crisis. My bachelor's and master's degrees were all about theory and not human emotions. Even theory could
not unravel those experiences. It would have to be hands-on, and good luck.
